The World’s Worst Bike Lanes: When Good Intentions Go Wrong

From Romania’s infamous “tree lane” to Edinburgh’s zigzag maze and London’s path to nowhere, these are the world’s most absurd examples of bike lane design gone wrong.

Cycling infrastructure is supposed to make riding safer and more convenient, but sometimes, the results are baffling, obstructive, or downright dangerous.

We’ve scoured the globe for some of the worst bike lanes, and these examples will leave any cyclist shaking their head.

Here are 10 of the most questionable bike lanes worldwide:

1. Edinburgh, Scotland – The Zig-Zag Nightmare

Edinburgh’s infamous cycle lane zigzags around bus stops and loading bays, creating a maddening route for riders.

The city council recognized the problem and submitted redesign plans in 2023.

2. Romania – Obstacles Everywhere

Some bike lanes are blocked by trees, bollards, or street furniture. One Romanian lane became famous for a tree planted right in the middle.

Even arrows on the trunk couldn’t fix this design oversight.

3. London, England – Into a Construction Site

A seemingly well-marked lane leads straight into a building site along the Thames.

London has improved cycling infrastructure in recent years, but this lane remains a cautionary tale.

4. Edinburgh, Scotland – Follow the Arrow?

Poorly placed signage leaves cyclists confused on how to navigate safely. Another example of Edinburgh’s cycling challenges.

5. Louisville, Kentucky – Paint Isn’t Enough

A simple line of paint does not a safe bike lane make. Cars pass too closely, creating a stressful ride.

Segregated lanes are far superior, allowing riders to pass each other comfortably.

6. Edinburgh Again – Too Short to Matter

This tiny five-meter lane barely gives riders room before dumping them back onto the main road, showing why some cyclists avoid bike lanes altogether.

7. Birmingham, England – The Tram Squeeze

A seemingly fine lane becomes impossibly narrow when a tram passes, leaving cyclists with barely enough space.

8. Körmend, Hungary – The Bumpy Adventure

Raised roadways and lower bike lanes led to large bumps every few meters. Fun on a mountain bike, frustrating for commuters.

9. North Yorkshire, England – The Scenic Detour

Cyclists are routed unnecessarily far from their intended path, adding distance and frustration to the journey.

10. Electric Car Hazards

Charging cables and parked electric cars can block or entangle cyclists, creating unexpected dangers on the road.
