Two Spectators Killed, Six Injured After Caravan Vehicle Crash at 2026 Tour du Rwanda

Tragedy struck the 2026 Tour du Rwanda as a caravan vehicle hit spectators in Gabiro, killing two and injuring six. Stage 1 continued to Rwamagana, where Itamar Einhorn sprinted to victory.

​The 2026 Tour du Rwanda began on Sunday, February 22, under tragic circumstances after a traffic accident during stage 1 left two spectators dead and six others injured.

​According to an official statement from race organizers, the incident occurred in the Gabiro area when a caravan vehicle veered off the road and struck several people standing roadside.

​“Sadly, two people lost their lives and six others were injured. The injured are receiving care, and we are closely following their condition. The Rwanda National Police has launched investigations into the cause. We extend our sincere condolences to the families affected and remain committed to public safety,” the statement read.

​Despite the accident, the opening stage proceeded and concluded in Rwamagana, where NSN Cycling Team’s Itamar Einhorn claimed victory in a final sprint.

​Serious spectator incidents remain rare but not without precedent. During the 2016 Tour de France, a child was struck by a caravan vehicle but survived without life-threatening injuries.
