Looking for your next great read? These six cycling books cover everything from epic bike-packing adventures to expert training advice perfect for anyone passionate about life on two wheels.
Sometimes the best blog ideas come simply from listening. Not long ago, I spotted a question on Facebook where someone was searching for a great cycling-related book to gift a friend.
That got me thinking why not put together a list of inspiring, insightful, and entertaining reads that every cycling fan would love?
Here are six books that deserve a spot on your shelf.
I had the chance to meet Jools Walker recently, and her energy instantly convinced me to put this one at the top of the list. Jools, also known from her blog Velo City Girl, shares her journey into cycling in her debut book Back in the Frame.
But this isn’t just a cycling memoir.
Jools explains that her motivation came from wanting to tell her own story and to highlight the experiences of women of color navigating a world that doesn’t always feel welcoming.
It’s a powerful blend of cycling, personal growth, and inclusivity that goes far beyond two wheels.
Adventure-seekers, this one’s for you. In her second book, Anna McNuff recounts her first big trip in 2013 an 11,000-mile cycling journey across the United States.
Unlike her later works, this book is lighter in tone and focuses less on her inner world and more on the incredible people she met along the way.
Anna describes it best: “less emotionally heavy… and more about the wonderful people I met in a country that has more layers than your Nanna’s English trifle.” If you love tales of endurance and connection, this is one to grab.
Although not solely about cycling, this book is a must-read for women who train, ride, or simply want to understand their bodies better. Roar takes a scientific look at female physiology and how women can optimize performance through smart nutrition and training.
As one reviewer put it, “Roar is an amazing piece of scientifically backed writing for any female athlete. When you follow her advice, you avoid overtraining and start working with your body instead of against it.” The key message: women are not just small men, and training programs should reflect that.
If bike-packing calls to you or you just love stories of daring exploration this memoir will transport you. Canadian adventurer Kate Harris cycled the length of the Silk Road with her friend Mel, a trip that took more than a year to complete.
The book isn’t only about the physical challenge, though. Harris reflects on borders, landscapes, and the deeper meaning of exploration itself.
She describes it as “a bike trip on the Silk Road, but also an exploration of how borders of all kinds impact lives and landscapes.” A thoughtful, inspiring read for anyone curious about the world.
Olympic legend Chris Hoy brings both knowledge and passion to this beautifully designed book. Whether you’re looking for guidance on maintenance, want to understand tubeless tires and disc brakes, or simply need training advice, this book is a practical companion for cyclists at all levels.
It’s also a gorgeous hardback edition, the kind of book you can dip in and out of or proudly display on your coffee table.
While many cycling books are personal or technical, this one takes a wider lens. Journalist Peter Walker explores the role of cycling in society and how different cities approach it. Amsterdam and Copenhagen stand as models of cycling culture, while places like the UK, the US, and Australia struggle with infrastructure and car dominance.
The book digs into why some drivers show hostility toward cyclists, a frustration many riders will relate to. It also arms you with knowledge and perspective, helping you feel more confident about claiming your space on the road.
These six books each bring something unique personal journeys, epic adventures, expert advice, or cultural analysis.
Whether you ride daily, dream of bikepacking adventures, or just want to learn more about cycling’s role in the world, you’ll find plenty of inspiration within these pages.
Perfect for the new riders!
