Cycling and Bone Density: Why Cyclists Get Osteopenia and How to Prevent It
Some elite road cyclists carry the spine of a man decades older. The cause is not age, and the fix is not calcium.
Sixteen elite cyclists cut training 60% for three weeks. Adding four 30-second sprints to one easy ride held 20-minute power. Here is the protocol.

Every year the same thing happens.
The season ends, the training drops, and by January the numbers look worse than anyone expected.
Most riders accept this as the price of a break.
Research from Nicki Almquist and colleagues at the Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences, working with Bent Rønnestad, suggests that price is optional.
The intervention took about eight minutes a week.
Sixteen male elite cyclists with a mean VO2max of 72 ml/kg/min reduced their training load by roughly 60% for three weeks at the end of the competitive season.
That is a real off-season, not a token one.
Most amateur riders never cut that hard.
The group was split in half.
One half did low-intensity training only.
The other half added 30-second sprints into one weekly low-intensity session.
Everything else was identical. Same volume reduction, same easy riding, same three weeks.
The sprint group maintained their 20-minute all-out performance, changing by -1%, which is statistically indistinguishable from holding steady.
The control group declined by 3%.
Fractional utilisation of VO2max, meaning the percentage of your maximum you can actually sustain during a hard effort, told the same story.
The sprint group moved +1.9 percentage points. The control group dropped 2.5 percentage points.
Sprint performance itself improved by 4% in the sprint group and fell 4% in the control group, an 8% swing.
That is the finding.
Eight minutes of hard work a week was the difference between holding 20-minute power and watching it leak away.
This is where the honest reading matters, and where most coverage of this study goes wrong.
VO2max was unaffected in both groups.
So was maximal aerobic power.
Power at 4 mmol/L blood lactate, a common threshold proxy, declined in both groups, by 4% in the sprint group and 5% in the control group.
So the sprints did not preserve everything.
They preserved a specific and useful thing: the ability to hold a high percentage of your ceiling for twenty minutes.
Threshold power still went down. Anyone telling you a few sprints protect your entire fitness profile is overselling the result.

The obvious question is why not just do a threshold session.
Earlier work by Rønnestad had already shown that a high-intensity session every 7 to 10 days during the post-season maintained threshold power, VO2max and 40-minute performance better than easy riding alone.
The problem is that the transition period exists for a reason.
It is when riders are supposed to recover mentally as well as physically, and structured interval sessions are exactly the thing most of them need a break from.
Short maximal efforts appear to carry less perceived strain than sustained interval work, which is the whole point.
The researchers also tracked burnout using the Athlete Burnout Questionnaire.
Total burnout score was unaffected in both groups.
That is quietly the most important result in the paper.
The sprints delivered a training stimulus without costing the psychological recovery the break was for.
A separate paper from the same research group extended the finding forward in time.
It found that including sprints in a weekly easy session during the transition period produced a performance advantage six weeks into the following preparatory period, and that this coincided with a higher performance VO2.
So the benefit was not just a holding pattern. It carried into the next build.
The protocol is not complicated, which is a large part of why it works.
Pick one easy ride a week. Keep it easy.
Inside it, perform four maximal 30-second sprints, spaced generously apart.
Full recovery between them, meaning several minutes of soft pedalling, not a fixed short rest.
Maximal means maximal. A 30-second effort at 90% is a different physiological stimulus and it is not the one being tested here.
Everything else in that ride stays genuinely low intensity.
The sprints are an addition, not a reason to turn the whole session into a hard day.
Two failure modes.
The first is doing the sprints and then also riding the rest of the session harder because they feel warmed up.
That converts a low-intensity ride into a middling one and defeats the purpose of the break.
The second is doing them too often. This is one session a week, inside a period of substantially reduced load.
Three sprint sessions a week is not the study, and it is not an off-season either.

All elite, too, with a mean VO2max of 72.
That combination limits how far the result travels.
Elite athletes detrain differently from amateurs, partly because they have more fitness to lose and partly because their baseline training load is far higher.
An amateur cutting from eight hours a week to three is not the same physiological event as an elite rider cutting 60% from twenty-plus hours.
There is also no female data here, which is a persistent gap in endurance research rather than a flaw unique to this paper.
And the effect sizes, while real, are modest.
A 3% decline in 20-minute power over three weeks is not a catastrophe for most riders.
Preventing it is worth eight minutes. It is not transformative.
The honest framing: this is a cheap, low-risk intervention with a small, well-measured benefit.
That is a good thing to know about, but it is not a secret weapon.
Here is the argument the study does not make, and we will.
Elite riders have coaches, structured plans, and a January build that will claw back whatever they lose.
Amateurs do not.
Most enthusiast riders do not have a preparatory period.
They have a vague intention to start training again once the weather improves, and the fitness they carry into spring is largely whatever survived the winter.
For that rider, holding 20-minute power through a genuine rest block is worth more than it is for a professional, because there is no organised process waiting to restore it.
